Tips to avoid common mistakes when choosing a new ERP solution

Published: October 21, 2019

There are lots of ERP services available to businesses, and knowing what is needed for your own business can be a tricky decision. Many clients come to us having already had a new system implemented, but finding it isn’t working for them. ERP solutions can be transformative to your workflows and processes when it’s done right but when it is not crafted around your needs, it will be much less effective.

Here are some tips to help you avoid common mistakes that are often made when opting for a new ERP service.

Start the process by analysing

An ERP provider, like etac, should carry out in-depth research in to the business to work out what the requirements are. It is important for the businesses themselves to look at their existing processes and decide what needs to improve. Streamlining and automating bad processes isn’t conducive to positive change. It will help the integration of services run much more smoothly if the right foundations are all in place from the start.

Involve everyone

We don’t just want to hear from the company’s IT department. We want the people who will be using the system the most to be across updating the processes. Consult with employees in finance, sales, customer service and operations to make sure the changes work for them and ensure a smooth transition for everyone.

During the implementation process make sure all stakeholders are kept up to date on the progress with regular communication so they understand the changes that are underway.

On-premises vs. cloud based

Before deciding to opt for a cloud based ERP system, you will need to consider the strength of your internet connection and whether employees need remote access.

If you are using an on-premise system you will often need on site IT support to manage hosting it within your own servers.

One step at a time

Problems can arise when too much is done too quickly. We wouldn’t suggest implementing a system and going live straight away. It is far smoother to gradually integrate the system and have input from all sides on the progress, so any gaps in the service can be pinpointed and resolved quickly.

Keeping up to date

Once the ERP solution is implemented, the work isn’t over. As well as having ongoing support from the company who provided you with the software, it is useful to have someone internally who is responsible to check the running of the system. If something isn’t working or there are security concerns, then having someone responsible for recognizing the issues and reaching out for support, helps keep your system doing its job.
