Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is the all new version of Dynamics NAV, with a sleek new interface. You might be wondering whether you need to upgrade, and what that actually means. Here’s some advice which will answer those burning questions…

Do we have to move our system to a cloud?

The system can be fully hosted from a cloud, but it can also be used with On Premises licences if that suits your needs better.

Clean upgrade or keep existing modifications?

A clean upgrade can be a much quicker option as you will have clean extension modifications, with just the data you need. It’s still possible to access old data, but this is a clean start with a new system.

The other option is to upgrade using your existing modifications and data. This kind of upgrade will take more time to implement due to its bespoke nature. Any tailor-made code you have will need to be migrated to the new extensions system. Not all ‘add-ons’ will be available on the new system, so it’s worth finding out which ones you will lose with the upgrade.

Where to host the system?

There are three places to host your system…

1. Microsoft Public Cloud

A fully managed shared cloud offers automatic software updates and system back-ups, and the cost is included in the subscription license cost. On the downside, you don’t control when the updates happen, which may cause some disruption and you can only have it with a subscription option.

2. Azure (Microsoft Private Cloud)

This option gives you cloud access but with much more control over updates and upgrades. Partners, like etac solutions, can help maximise performance and tune the system to your specific needs. They will also need to plan the upgrades as they won’t happen automatically. You can either go subscription or choose the on-premise licencing. This option requires additional host costs.

3. Your own hosting environment

Whether it’s on your own system, or from an out-of-house supplier, you can host from your own cloud or physical server. This gives you full control and the option to choose between subscription or on-premise licensing. Similar to the Azure option, it will mean some extra hosting costs and the need to plan upgrades.

It’s important to note, depending on your current software version, upgrading straight to Business Central may not be possible as you can’t upgrade from older version of Dynamics NAV. However, there are some promotions available for existing customers depending on your plan.
